A Reference Guide on t he Use o f Indicators for Integrated Coastal Management OceanDocs
Belfiore, S.; Balgos, M.; McLean, B.; Galofre, J.; Blaydes, M.; Tesch, D..
This first issue is devoted to the use of indicators for ICAM, and is a direct result of the IOC-DFO-NOAA-CSMP International Workshop on the same topic, organised in May 2002, in Ottawa. Based on a background paper prepared by the Center for the Study of Marine Policy (University of Delaware) in preparation for the workshop, the aim of this Reference Guide is to present a literature review on the use of indicators around the world, from various programmes and projects, at global, regional, national and local scale. The need for indicators and reporting techniques which reflects the performance of coastal management projects and programmes and reveals the complex relationship that exist between coastal ecosystem health and anthropogenic activities,...

In 2018 we celebrated 25 years of development of radar altimetry, and the progress achieved by this methodology in the fields of global and coastal oceanography, hydrology, geodesy and cryospheric sciences. Many symbolic major events have celebrated these developments, e.g., in Venice, Italy, the 15th (2006) and 20th (2012) years of progress and more recently, in 2018, in Ponta Delgada, Portugal, 25 Years of Progress in Radar Altimetry. On this latter occasion it was decided to collect contributions of scientists, engineers and managers involved in the worldwide altimetry community to depict the state of altimetry and propose recommendations for the altimetry of the future. This paper summarizes contributions and recommendations that were collected and...

Assessment of an environmental barrier to transport of ichthyoplankton from the southern to OceanDocs
Lett, Christophe; Veitch, Jennifer; Van der Lingen, Carl D.; Hutchings, Larry.
The Lüderitz upwelling cell and Orange River cone (LUCORC) area, a transboundary region between South Africa and Namibia, is considered to be an environmental barrier to transport of ichthyoplankton from the southern to the northern Benguela upwelling ecosystems. We use environmental data and modelling to assess the potential mechanisms responsible for this barrier: environmental data were extracted from the 1 × 1° World Ocean Atlas 2001 database and used to build maps of annual mean salinity, temperature, chlorophyll, dissolved oxygen and nutrient concentrations; outputs of a regional circulation model were used in an individual-based model to assess the transport of passive particles from the southern to the northern Benguela. The data show no clear...

Geomorfología e hidrografía de los estuarios OceanDocs
Piccolo, M.C.; Perillo, G.M..
Estuaries are coastal-water in which marine and freshwater environments interact. They respond to natural changes, but specially to anthropogenic factors. The definition, environmental factors and classification of estuaries are analyzed. A review is presented of the present status of knowledge on the geomorphology and hydrography of Argentine estuaries.

Highlights of 1960-1990 : Achievements in the last 30 years by the Nigerian institute for oceanography and marine research and its parent research division of the federal departement of fisheries, Lagos OceanDocs
Ajayi, T.O..
Before the Nigerian Institute for Oceanography and Marine Research was established in 1975, the Research division of the parent body carried out extensive resources surveys of the inshore waters (0-50m depth), identified and documented most of the Nigerian Marine and brackish water fish and shrimp resources. The promulgation of the Sea Fisheries Decree of 1971 was based on the research findings of the division which also initiated the biological study of the commercially important fishes. The research efforts of the division provided the first ever scientific information on the coastal oceanography of Nigeria. The possibility of a viable brackish water polyculture was also established at Buguma and Lagos....

Modeling 3D Rhone river plume using a higher order advection scheme ArchiMer
Arnoux-chiavassa, S; Rey, V; Fraunie, P.
Effects of discretization scheme on the numerical modeling of 3D Rhone River plume dynamics are investigated. A higher order scheme of total variation diminishing (TVD) type is used to discretize advection terms of both momentum and scalar equations. It is shown that this scheme widely damps the numerical diffusion and improves the representation of the dynamical and density fronts bounding the flow. It enables to accurately investigate the effects of the turbulent diffusion, which was previously masked by the numerical one. Numerical results are also compared to in situ data for two situations related to different wind conditions. For the case without wind stress, associated to supercritical values of the Richardson number, optimized turbulent...

Observations océanographiques effectuées en 1981 OceanDocs
Toure, D..

Noviembre, 1994 OceanDocs
Guerrero, R.A..
Using the CTD data obtained on the R/V Dr.E.L.Holmberg fishery research cruise H-13/94 (November 1994), oceanographic conditions of the coastal area of the Argentine-Uruguayan Common Fishing Zone (AUCFZ) and El Rincón (Buenos Aires Prov., Argentina) are described. Two physical environments were differentiated: the Río de la Plata estuarine systems and El Rincón coastal regime. In both systems thermal and haline fronts that affect the distribution of reproductive concentrations, nursery and spawning areas of coastal species, are identified. Salinity fields of the AUCFZ, as a function of statistical winds, are synoptically analyzed. In El Rincón, the temporal stability observed on temperature and salinity allowed to describe the mean physical conditions for...

The "flux, etat de la mer, et tele'de'tection en conditions de fetch variable'' (FETCH) was aimed at studying the physical processes associated with air-sea exchanges and mesoscale oceanic circulation in a coastal region dominated by frequent strong offshore winds. The experiment took place in March-April 1998 in the northwestern Mediterranean Sea (Gulf of Lion). Observations were collected with the R/V L'Atalante, with an air-sea interaction spar (ASIS) buoy, with waverider buoys, and with research aircraft equipped for in situ and remote sensing measurements. The present paper is an introduction to the following special section, which groups 12 papers (including this one) presenting results on turbulent flux measurements at the ocean surface, on the...
